This week is half term so I am going to use the time to come up with

- some new designs

- conduct some market research

- reestablish who my customer is

- find a brand that I like the aesthetic of to model in terms of social media etc

- and use any money made to fund prototypes.

I definitely want to use this time to refocus and reflect on what has worked but more importantly what has not.

I think it is important to be honest and create new strategy that is not only true to the ethos of the brand but also keeps me in check!!

Reflective Narratives

The business of fashion is very complex.

Getting the brand ethos right, the garments and how you align yourself in the grand scheme of things ie the fashion world is a lot harder than I had anticipated.

Reflecting on the brand and making changes today has led to a larger overall idea. One final push with the current collection due to the spring summer season being upon us.

Hopefully this will in turn generate funds for a new collection. One that is more refined.

Some changes have been made to the name of a couple of t-shirts to make the narrative stronger. Each garment has a story behind it, which I hope to convey in the next couple of months.

So back to the research drawing board, to the funding options and contacting micro-influencers.

And in terms of the larger reflective concepts behind what I am trying to achieve is the 'ripple effect', a shift into peoples social conscience, to talk and debate about diversity and representation, why visibility matters and why everybody should champion it.

The Final Countdown

Ok that's sounds a little dramatic. But what I mean is the countdown to the fashion shoot.

Scouting various locations in Hackney has been at the top of the agenda this week. The main considerations are fulfilling my own brief in terms of the location, urban and edgy. Whilst considering how the background could compliment the graphic nature of the t-shirts at the same time. It is like creating a visual narrative to draw people into your world, seduce them into wanting to purchase your garments. Again, it sounds dramatic but it is selling an concept, a lifestyle.

Another huge consideration is the popularity of certain areas especially as the shoot will take place on a Saturday. So whilst, specific locations may look good visually they may be too busy to shoot within. Shoreditch for example has many such as the one below

However it may be too much for both the photographer and the models. I am sure just the camera lens and me staring at them is enough without having an audience too. However I am not into the over stylised posing, I prefer more casual stances almost like a captured moments. But I will seek advice and allow that to inform my final decision that is flexible and open to suggestion on the day. My feeling is that it is good to have a plan but not be too rigid. Creativity needs to flow and you have to follow your instinct, if it does not look right, why bother? But just going with the flow is very problematic as it could spiral out of control, we always need direction, even on a photoshoot.

So my focus today is on uploading the photos, so I know which ones at this stage capture the essence of what I am trying to achieve. Then print a contact sheet for each location, sign posting what I visualise happening in that space, for example, which model is where, are they standing, sitting etc?  Communication with the photographer has been great and he has been very helpful so far. Fingers crossed we arrive at the same conclusions once I have shared the options.

Part of my ongoing research have also been to seek inspiration from visiting degree shows. I love it, it is always so inspiring and keeps you on your toes regarding creative processes. If only I would win the lottery and go back to do an MA.  Anyway enough of daydreaming.

However I do love what I am doing with the business I just need to focus on my passion and seek out those who can help me with elements of the fashion industry that I am not ofay with.  On Tuesday I am meeting a friend of a friend who works in the fashion world as a graphic designer and an art director. So it is going to be invaluable to speak with her, show her my ideas and see what she suggests. Looking forward to the discussion.

The not so great part of business is the financial side. I was contacted by Companies House to submit my annual report. Tax is way above my knowledge and understanding so I did the only thing you can do in a situation like this and contacted an accountancy firm who specialise in fashion. After a conversation regarding my business, turnover and charges, a meeting was arranged with some negotiation (haggling) on the financial side of things as to how much I can afford to pay. It is a very intimidating business the tax side of things as is the cost. A big shock. The initial meeting is tomorrow so fingers crossed that goes well. I will be glad when it is all done. So I can concentrate on the fun side of things like being creative and looking at marketing channels.

Anyway, no time like the present, back to planning.

I hope I can write about many successes as a result of next weeks shoot. Wish me luck.
