Samples Have Arrived - Second Collection Time
FullSizeRender.jpg

The anticipation of opening the package the samples were in was almost too much. But I was so excited to see them.

The majority have printed as expected but a few need modifying for one reason or another.

Aside from ordering some on white backgrounds to compare the outcome and trimming a few edges, moving the image up etc, it is time to start planning the new photoshoot and everything that comes after.

Feel excited again.

But for now, here is a sneak preview of the t-shirts so far. I am pleased with the quality too, all fair trade.

Which ones are you drawn too? What do you think? Any constructive criticism welcome.

Summer Focus ~ Time to Re-energise and Create

One blink and the summer holidays are upon us once again.

Today is the first proper day, technically last Friday was but the start of the week feels more significant. A fresh start.

I have not wrote a blog for a while as I needed to take some time out and really reflect on what I have achieved and what milestones I need to put in place.

Moving the brand forward is imperative and this is where my focus needs to be this summer holiday; on product development.

Choice in life is everything and there needs to be more choice regarding the t-shirt designs. I have known this for some time. But the creative block has been strong. And working full time does not help either. Being a teacher is very demanding.

Anyway, looking forward...

For the first week I want to just have fun drawing and painting. I think I have felt really restricted by the demands of the business, which has ultimately impacted on my outlet hence the lack of blog writing and overall productivity.

There have been moments of inspiration and motivation but I know in myself it is not enough. The more I produce the more I feel confident and the designs will be much more realised. This is the place I want to be. Feeling energised and inspired.

Once I have some designs that I am happy with a can move forward with experimenting digitally or screen printing them. Then on to the garment. I will continue to focus on t-shirts and sweatshirts at this juncture. There is no point in complicating things. Establishing the designs and signature look is more important to me at this stage in my entrepreneurial journey that expanding on the garment choices.

Recently a friend, who is also a teacher,  helped me reflect on many aspects of the business and how to sell the remaining stock I have. Time to screw the money head on so I can pump it back into the business rather than focusing on the precious notion of it being an ‘arty’ garment that can only appear in specific spaces. I, ultimately need to be more open and once the brand is more established I can become more picky as to where the pieces appear, well here’s hoping.

Basically I need to get out of this lull. remember my vision and why I started this - inclusivity and diversity in fashion.

So, time to get proactive. Where are my magazines?

New Designs, New Women of Colour, New Creative Expressions

Waiting for the inspiration to kick in can be a real test of patience.

Simple t-shirt visualisation of my initial sketches. On the fence about this.

But when it does there is so much productivity. It feels energising and motivational. I have a new sense of focus for the brand.

Visually this is very impactful but is it too decisive?

Conducting some market research in a few of my favourite shops definitely helped. Coupled with the customers in there really cemented who I want to wear my garments - the young and fashionably edgy. So I best make edgy designs that are commercially viable.

So to improve on the designs, to experiment, to remember who has inspired me from the art world and who continues to do so. I will take inspiration from them, my favourites ~ Warhol & Basquiat.

So, embracing the vitamin D today I just sat in my garden and added to the drawings I had already sketched of women of colour.

I knew I wanted to be more expressive but in my own style. To just add paint, ink and pen in anyway that felt right. I wanted the images of the women to be strong, to be visually impactful.

It was very liberating and enjoyable process because I just went with the flow. I just wanted to make marks, add texture and experiment.

These are not the finished designs as I want to incorporate more layers, more text and maybe some colour. I am not sure yet but I want to push the visual aesthetic whilst keeping to the ethos of the brand - being inclusive and celebrating women of colour.

I have also been thinking of a new statement to coincide with the collection, which again is about drawing attention to women, women who identify as being of colour and highlighting the need for more visibility not just tokenistic gestures that are supposed to appease people.

The statement has been rolling around in my head for a few days. So I quickly inked it on to a page with some eyes, to symbolise the need to be looking, paying attention and questioning. it needs some work but I am happy with the message overall.

Let me know what you think - all feedback is good feedback.
