When Creativity Comes from Within

Maintaining focus on the new collection whilst writing and reflecting here is more important than documenting my own development regarding understanding digital marketing here I think? You may disagree?

Creating the ‘We Are Here’ collection was exciting because I was experimenting with my creative expression whilst keeping to the core concept of the brand about the visibility of women of colour.

Coupling the artistic element with my own experiences was cathartic because it is an ongoing internal dialogue for me especially regarding my own identity and perceptions of self.

This design, ‘Where Are you From? You Look Like You’re From…’ Is a direct response to my own experiences growing up and still to this day.

When you have mixed heritage, sometimes it may be obvious what you ethnic background is sometimes not, as is the case for my mum and I.

Most people are intrigued and can sense that we are not ‘fully English’, so it becomes a guessing game of sorts and more fun, particularly for me when the answers vary significantly.

Speaking with other mixed heritage, mostly women, about this they tell very similar stories. Especially if their heritage is of Indian descent, like my mums. They find that the most common guess is Spanish or South American too, which of course is not a problem. But again interesting as we also hear that we do not look typically Indian, whatever that is.

Either way, we are white passing which enables us to live a much more privileged life than many other people of colour. So it is important to maintain perspective on this aspect.

This design ‘What’s Up’ came from a linear drawing of two Indian Model from Vogue India. They were styled in traditional sari’s but had so much sass, they really captured my imagination and I knew I wanted to include them as a design.

I felt they embodied the way in which women are feeling much more empowered with not only their bodies but also their voice. Being unapologetic for their opinions and being authentically them and this is what I want to remember when I wear and look at this t-shirt. I hope others do too.

Reflecting On the Second Collection So Far

The launch of the second collection of T-shirts was a week today and there have been some interesting developments already.

The amount of traffic on my website, especially on Sunday, was interesting because it really spiked, which was the first time this had happened. So I have been analysing people’s behaviour on the website and which t-shirt they are drawn too, which is intriguing as this can change from day-to-day. I need to look in more depth at the ones getting the most views over the week. 

Excitingly I have sold some t-shirts, which is fantastic. As a designer / artist, it is always great to know your work is ‘out there’ somewhere and as a want to be entrepreneur/ business woman, it helps fund the next projects.

The M.I.A t-shirt (design on the left) was supported by Refugee Action via their twitter account, which I was so happy about. I hope I can donate lots of profit from this t-shirt to their worthy cause. 

So what next? I definitely need to work with a social media guru and specialist SEO person as I’m still very much a novice when it comes this area and I need an expert. I realise I am very adhoc when it comes to social media so I need a specific strategy and someone to do that side of things for me. 

I am already thinking about new designs and what I could do for the future. This is the most exciting aspect for me, being creative and expressing myself through various mediums especially via fashion.

I am still completely in love with the idea that the t-shirt is a canvas accessible to everyone and anyone who likes what the brand stands for and or the visual aesthetic. 

It’s Here - ‘We Are Here’ Collection Launched Today

I am beyond happy to have launched my second collection of t-shirts - We Are Here.

From conception to samples and finally updating the website, which has been a varied journey but one that I am now happy with as I believe the t-shirts look great and convey the messages of Inclusivity, Representation, Visibility and We Are Here despite the very small budget I had to work with.

Of course I would like a bigger range of models to showcase the messages above, but this is an aspect that I really want to work on in the future. For now, I will embrace and be forever thankful for the generosity of everyone involved that helped my collection come to life Including the models.

There is no small irony in the visual aesthetics of the models who in a way represent my Mum and Aunty, who are both mixed race and grew up in a world with very little role models for them to align themselves with. They have inspired me to be the woman I am today. 

I hope this collection of illustrations will enable more visibility of women of colour and create a concrete catwalk that is not confined to the runways nor gallery spaces that seem to only appeal to the few.

These T-shirts are unisex and deliberately so, so anybody can support this message and wear them regardless of how they identify. In addition they are print on demand, using a company that uses fair trade so to not only support workers but to try and reduce environmental damage, which is so important given the amount of damage the Fashion Industry can have.
